Automata

Automata are the real forerunners of robots. They are basic mechanical constructions that typically translate some type of crank-based mechanical input into differing types of motion to animate the model.

In this activity you will need to review the basic information included in the links and then build an Automata of your own. Your automata can be built from scratch using the resources for various mechanisms or be built using the Automata PDF files available from:  Flying Pig - Paper Animation Kits.

The minimum expectation for your Automata is a model that utilizes the following:

  • Crank-based input
  • A shaft and Cam to convert rotational movement into vertical movement
  • Model that is animated by the turning of the crank

These are very basic guidelines, but the goal is to work on constructing a very simple mechanical device.

My agreeable sheep automata:

View video of movement and get an idea of size. It took me about three hours to complete this project.
